BANGKOK, Nov 30 (TNA) -- Senior Thai police officers are now holding truce talks with anti-government protesters loyal to People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in an attempt to end political unrest in the country, said assistant national police chief Pol. Lt-Gen. Pongsapat Pongcharoen.
Gen. Pongsapat told a press conference that Thailand's new acting police chief, Pol. Gen. Pateep Tanprasert has called for a daily meeting with senior police officers and concerned government agencies to evaluate the general situation until the marathon protests launched by the PAD are cooled off.
The PAD continues to occupy Government House, Suvarnabhumi international airport and Don Mueang domestic airport. The two airports have been closed since early last week, causing tens of thousands of international travellers to be stranded while Thais abroad are unable to return home.
According to Gen. Pongsapat, the acting national police chief instructed police not to use force with the protesters and to avoid confrontation as truce talks are underway. There are hopes that the protest could end peacefully, he said.
However, police are concerned about a possible 'third hand' party which could create violence with police taking the blame, he added. (TNA)
